Office Set Up

An office can be setup either in your home or in some leased premises and in the early stage of your business carefully consider how much expenditure you need to make towards your office arrangements.

Home Office

This is a good way to start your business because you do not have the added expense of paying rent for space but you need to have a spare area at your home where you can operate from.

It is preferable for you to have a separate room for you to set up in but if this not possible a clear space that is available will do.

Even if you carefully separate the business areas of your home from the residential portions, the existence of the home office can create conflicts that you wouldn't face in an office located away from your home. Friends and family might not fully understand the implications of a home office and may need some time to adjust to the fact that you require uninterrupted work time, even though you are at home.

Most people working out of their homes find it helpful to have the work area somewhat isolated from the "personal" areas of the home. Whether you will find this true for you depends on what type of product or service your business provides, how you work best, and why you're working out of the home in the first place.

Leased Office.

If you are just starting out in business, and you're selecting your first business office, spend some time to consider what you need from your facility. This process will require a lot of cold, hard planning.

Everything connected with your business should lead customers to believe their product or service needs will be met to their satisfaction. Your business facility can make a powerful statement about your business. It should, of course, be the type of statement that will present your business in a good light.

Finally, maybe you have a clear picture of your facility needs and have identified one or more potential sites for your business. The next question is often: should you rent or buy? Because important, and complex, tax and cash management issues are tied up in this rent or buy question, many small business owners rely heavily on the advice of their accountant or lawyer when making this decision.

Check the newspaper or approach your local real estate agent to find out what is available. Do not rush this as you are going to commit yourself to a continuing expense so you need to get it right.

Any lease arrangements need to be considered carefully and if possible see if you can get a lease on a month to month basis. You often find a business will lease you a room in there office area and sometimes you can share the use of their facilities.

Serviced Office

This is also a good way of having a office when you start out. Check the yellow pages and contact two or three serviced office businesses to compare costs and find out what they offer.

Office Products

Make a list of what you require and then take the time to do some research before you buy. With the larger items do some research by way of product reviews and specifications so that can be certain that you are purchasing the correct product for your business.
