Legal
Issues
On of the key professionals that you need for your
business is a lawyer. Many business people leave choosing a lawyer or
solicitor until the last minute and assume that a they are only there in
case of urgent need such as court cases and contracts.
You can find a lawyer in the phone book or you can get a personal
recommendation from someone such as a friend or another local business who
has a lawyer that they are happy with.
A lawyer can help you with many important parts of your business including
advice on trading laws, copyrights, patents, insurance issues and many other
items.
Be aware of the cost as you will be paying for your
advice so prepare any papers of information in advance, and either take them
with you or send them off to them so by the time of your appointment he will
have read your notes and can discuss with you.
If you see a problem occurring get your solicitor involved early and this
can sometimes save more grief and expense later. If you leave it too late
you can be involved in expensive court or legal action whereas all that may
have been required in the early stage was a solicitors letter to elicit
payment .or prevent further problems.
Make sure you listen to the advice your solicitor gives
you even though it is sometime not what you want to hear, but in most cases
they will be talking from experience and from an independent point of view.
Always ask what costs are involved and if you are concerned about this set a
limit in writing on the amount money you are prepared to spend and if this
limit is reached you can then decide if you want to carry on.
