Importing

Success in Importing is very dependant on the products selected and how successful you are with your marketing.
The actual import of the products is not a difficult process and can be setup  quite easily but what requires the most effort is the marketing of your products.

Many times different people have gone into business as an importer and have purchased the goods in relatively large quantities based on the belief that they assume  will sell well, either because of price or they consider the product is relatively unique.

If you have not researched the market very carefully this could turn out to be a costly mistake. The large stores can import a product, and because they already have the potential buyers in their store it is very likely the product will sell.

You are not in this situation and even if you went to the large stores to see if they would purchase your product they are just as likely to secure a source and import the product themselves.

If you can negotiate with your overseas supplier so that you have exclusive right to sell the product in New Zealand this would definitely help with the development although you still would have to make sure the market is there.

Research of the market place is the solution in the business of importing because you clearly need to spend most of the early stage of setting up your business of finding out for certain if the product you are considering will sell.

Think about who will be the purchaser of you goods, the consumer because if they do not think very highly of it you may be on the wrong track.

Lets presume you have contacted the consumer of this product and you have received a good reaction so what you have to do now is think about how they will buy this product.

Lets says they will purchase it from the retail store. Who is going to sell it to the retail store. This where you come in because you can consider selling direct to the retail store yourself but this can be expensive because the retailer will probably only sell in smaller quantities therefore it may be a better idea to sell the merchandise to a distributor who calls on these retailers on a regular basis.

To find a distributor who sells to the retailers your particular product can constantly require a lot of research and then you have to persuade them that the product you have is a commercial item because they will not want to take on the distribution of a product that does not sell well.

I trust this has given you some idea on how careful you need to be when importing products into New Zealand and the answer is research that market and do not take for granted that the product you have found will sell.
